United Way Provides Support for Drone Technology to Conduct Roof Inspections

Posted Nov 16, 2020

INHS has been awarded $3,500 from United Way of Tompkins County’s 2020-2021 T. Merrell Shipherd Fund that addresses emerging needs in the community, supports efforts to improve organizational efficiency, and encourages collaboration among local human service organizations.

This award will support a new INHS project: Better, Safer, Cheaper: Using Drone Technology to Conduct Roof Inspections for Affordable Housing. The funds will allow INHS to purchase a drone and train staff as drone pilots to provide more comprehensive, accurate, and safer roof inspections.

INHS conducts over 50 roof inspections a year for low-income purchase assistance and rehabilitation clients. Due to the age of available housing stock for low-income buyers and owners, failing roofs are a big concern. This innovative and emerging technology will allow INHS to continue to provide quality inspections that provide an accurate picture of a roof’s condition without compromising inspector safety or decreasing the quality and efficacy of the inspection.

“The United Way of Tompkins County continues to be a strong supporter of INHS. We are thrilled to have the opportunity and access to funding for the purchase of a drone. The drone will allow us to get a much better picture of what is going on with our client’s roofs before, during, and after the rehabilitation process, while ensuring the safety of our staff and integrity of roof inspections for our clients,” said Construction Services Director Loralee Morrow.
