Mission Moment
When Gloria, a US Army veteran, lost her long-term lease in Elmira, she wasn’t sure where to turn. Under pressure to find a new place to live, she feared she would lose her stability and community. After she stumbled upon INHS’s new Wheat Street Apartments, she applied and is now settled into her light-filled apartment with rabbits Rex and Angel.
“What brought me here was destiny,” Gloria said. “I was looking online and when I [saw] this place, I just knew it was my home.” She was so enthusiastic about her new home, in fact, that she secured her own moving truck, intending to move into the apartment all by herself before INHS employees showed up to assist her.
As a nature lover, Gloria appreciates the view from her windows, a nearby park, and proximity to Cayuga Lake: “You can’t get any better than this… I look around and say, ‘I made it. I’m here.’” The peaceful apartment, which has ample room for her rabbits to run around, has given Gloria a renewed sense of safety, connectivity, and optimism.
By utilizing her gifts as a writer, she seeks to inspire others with messages of positivity and perseverance. “I want to thank Lucy Brown, cofounder of INHS,” Gloria said. “I would like to be able to follow in her footsteps.” Looking towards the future, she plans to publish a three-volume book of her poems and stories. “I’m just glad that now that I don’t have to fight anymore, I can just live and be an encouragement to people.”
