Mission Moment
Tish never imagined she would get the opportunity to own her own home. As the daughter of a single immigrant mother, she grew up moving from place to place with an understanding that entering the homebuyer market remained out of the realm of possibility for her family.
After years of renting and having lived in over 25 different places, Tish began to consider buying a house for herself, but she found that the market was difficult to break into without support or knowledge of how the process worked. When she discovered INHS’s Homebuyer Education Program, she gained the information and confidence she needed to pursue her goal. “Learning how to buy a house was extraordinarily helpful. It took away the fear factor,” Tish explained. “With that class, I saw, ‘Hey, I can do this!’”
With INHS’s assistance, Tish was able to close on her dream home in 2013. “It checked all my boxes,” she said. Tish enjoys her home’s alternative heating source (a wood pellet stove), vegetable garden, and location in the Ithaca city school district, which has allowed her to raise her daughter in an ideal setting.
Ten years after buying, when Tish began experiencing leaking from her roof, she once again sought out INHS to remediate the issue. She had her roof redone through the organization’s Major Repair Program. “It’s gorgeous,” Tish said of the rehabilitated roof. “I feel really grounded here. I feel really happy and at home. I don’t have to go anywhere else now.”
