Tioga Downs Foundation Grant Expands the Reach of Minor Repair Program

Posted Mar 5, 2024

We are delighted to announce that INHS is the recipient of a recent $25,000 grant from the Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation. This grant will support INHS’s Minor Repair Program, which offers life-changing home repairs and accessibility improvements to low-income seniors and people with disabilities. For the first time ever, these funds will allow the expansion of the program outside of Tompkins County, empowering INHS to extend vital assistance to homeowners in Tioga and Chemung Counties.

The grant is part of $1.5 million recently awarded by Tioga Downs to 100 local non-profits operating in the Twin Tiers region. “We eagerly anticipate the ripple effects of these grants making a real difference close to home,” said Tioga Downs owner Jeff Gural.

The Minor Repair Program benefits those who own their own homes yet may struggle to maintain them or make necessary upgrades required to age in place, like Donna and Mason Gilbert. After the Gilberts retired, health problems meant they fell behind on home repairs. Their entry stairs had deteriorated to the point that they could no longer host their young granddaughter. INHS provided Donna and Mason with new stairs, even using a special design with shorter stair heights to minimize Donna’s arthritis pain. Today, Mason and Donna no longer worry about getting in and out of their home.

Tioga Downs’s generous community partnership will have a tangible impact on our neighbors in Tioga and Chemung Counties, restoring dignity and security for families like the Gilberts. “With the support of the Tioga Downs Foundation, INHS is thrilled to be able to extend our minor repair services into Chemung and Tioga Counties,” said Delia Yarrow, INHS’s Director of Homeownership. “Repairs such as grab bars, comfort-height toilets, and safe stairs can make the difference of being able to feel safe in your home or not.”
