Story 26: From Community Service to Community Support

Posted Aug 14, 2026

Having served many clients whose lives had been significantly impacted by INHS’s programs, Red Cross and DSS worker Trish was familiar with how INHS supported the local community. So, when she encountered an unexpected home repair issue at her Lansing home, she knew who to call.

When Trish purchased her home, it was anticipated that the house’s 10-year-old roof would easily last another 15 years without the need for intervention. Unfortunately, she determined that the roof wasn’t as sustainable as originally projected; while mowing her lawn one day, Trish discovered small pieces of shingles littered across the yard. Faced with the exorbitant price of repairs, she reached out to her friends at INHS for assistance.

INHS’s Major Repair Program helped guide Trish through her options and, in addition to replacing the damaged roof, inspected other parts of her home to ensure everything was safe and up to code. “After many years of service in the community through the Red Cross and DSS, it was great to experience INHS’s customer service through this project,” Trish said. “We were really impressed with how they went above and beyond.”

Trish was also thankful that she would be able to continue spending her weekends with her daughter instead of having to pick up extra working hours to pay off a roof replacement. “As she grows up, I’m discovering how precious our time is together; I’m grateful to INHS for giving us more time!” she shared.
