Seniors Receive COVID Vaccine at Newfield Gardens!

Posted Mar 4, 2021

You can feel the sense of relief in Newfield Garden Apartments (NGA), an INHS senior living community, as nineteen residents received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine, courtesy of the Tompkins County Health Department, on March 4, and the second on April 1. The apartment building is starting to come alive after over a year of quiet hallways and isolating seniors.

Property Management Specialist Annie Perry said of the vaccination experience, “Many of these seniors have hardly left their apartments for a year, so the feelings of relief and gratitude were powerful.”

Seventeen-year NGA resident, Linda, said that she’s left the apartment complex only four times in the past year, each due to health-related issues and appointments. To her, the opportunity to receive the vaccine on-site has brought feelings of safety and gratitude. She has also found silver linings despite being physically isolated throughout the past year. Not only did she adopt a cat right before the pandemic, Butterscotch, who loves to cuddle, she also started to reach out to former colleagues and friends whom she hasn’t spoken to in over a decade to form connections. However, she’s very much looking forward to leaving her apartment to go shopping and meet up with old friends!

Other NHA residents also shared their gratitude for the opportunity:

  • Joni: “I suffer from many illnesses and I wouldn’t have been able to leave to get the shot if not for it coming here.”
  • Cathy (the first resident to get vaccinated!): “It didn’t even hurt. A lot of seniors didn’t know how to get the vaccine, so this is good. I’m very happy.”
  • Patrick: “This last year has just faded away. I’m glad I didn’t have to go out. With all my illnesses, I’ve been afraid to take a breath. This is welcome relief.”
  • Linda: “I am so glad the vaccine clinic came here! It’s so hard to get out so this was my only opportunity.”
