Minor Repair Program Expands!

Posted Jul 6, 2026
The heart of INHS, our Minor Repair Program (MRP) continues to grow each year, enabling us to serve more of our neighbors than ever before. Launched in 1979, this program now serves homeowners across Tompkins, Chemung, and Tioga Counties. Beginning May 2026, we’re excited to extend these services to Cayuga County as well.

In 2024, the Minor Repair team completed 134 repair jobs, with 1,947 staff hours and $82,344 in materials provided, to help homeowners stay safe, stable, and independent in their homes. In 2025, our team upped those figures, completing 149 repair jobs—an 11 percent increase—with 2,023 staff hours. We supplied $107,210 in materials, a 30 percent jump.

The Minor Repair Program has been transformational for vulnerable members of our community, like Nancy and her husband, Humayun. When they retired, they downsized to a cozy home in a manufactured housing park. But living on a fixed income meant there wasn’t much room to address the growing challenges caused by Nancy’s neuropathy. Everyday tasks became increasingly unsafe.

INHS’s MRP crew swapped a slippery tub for a walk‑in shower, replaced worn bathroom flooring that posed a tripping hazard, and built safe wooden stairs to replace unstable metal ones. With these changes, Nancy can move confidently in and around her home. “I’m comfortable, and they’ve made it much safer for me,” she said.
In 2026, INHS continues to expand this program that has changed so many lives. We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Care Compass, which will allow us to support high users of Medicaid—including renters!—across Tompkins and Tioga Counties, with accessibility modifications, asthma remediation, and other health‑related housing improvements. 2026 also marks MRP’s expansion into Cayuga County.

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2026 while looking ahead, INHS is committed to helping more of our neighbors feel safe, comfortable, and confident in their homes, whether through a simple fix or a major accessibility improvement. We’re grateful for our partners, funders, and community supporters that empower us to continue this meaningful work.
