Mission Moment

Nancy Raza

When Nancy Raza and her husband, Humayun, retired, they downsized to a cozy home in a manufactured housing park and paid off all their debts. But their fixed-income budget couldn’t stretch to fund improvements needed to address Nancy’s neuropathy. With INHS’s help, she can now comfortably age in place, thanks to repairs designed to enhance safety and accessibility.

As Nancy’s neuropathy progressed, navigating the bathroom became a challenge. “If I got into the tub, I would slip and slide and I couldn’t get up, especially since there were no handrails,” Nancy explained. She was limited to a single entrance to her home, as the metal stairs to her driveway were unsafe, sitting on wobbly four-by-fours. “I was afraid of using them,” she said. “They really weren’t stable.”

Nancy learned about INHS from a neighbor and reached out for help. INHS’s Minor Repair Program installed a walk-in shower with grab bars and replaced the worn bathroom flooring, eliminating a tripping hazard. The precarious stairs were removed and sturdy wooden ones built in their place, enabling Nancy to access her car and patio without walking around the exterior of the house. Small but crucial safety improvements like smoke detectors and upgraded handrails were installed.

With these improvements, Nancy feels secure navigating her home, which has freed her husband to travel to help their children and grandchildren, scattered across the country. And when those children and grandchildren visit, she’s proud to show off her new bathroom. “It’s just beautiful,” she said. “I’m comfortable, and they’ve made it much safer for me.”
