Village Grove Project Update

Posted Mar 28, 2024
Due to concerns surrounding the placement of transformers at the Village Grove construction site in Trumansburg, INHS would like to address the situation.

As you may know, the Village Grove project is committed to being an all-electric development with no natural gas service with the goal of achieving NetZero. This commitment will lessen dependency on fossil fuels in an effort to be as environmentally responsible as possible. To achieve this, the project requires three-phase power to service the site rather than the typical single-phase transformer that services most single-family homes from the utility pole.

When coordinating the new electric service with NYSEG, ground mounted transformers were requested, but due to NYSEG requirements, it was not an option and pole mounted three-phase transformers and switch gear is required, along with multiple poles and the transformer having to be mounted on a rack between two poles.

Various designs were evaluated by NYSEG, and two options were considered: either on the east side of South St. close to existing homes or along the frontage of the INHS property where the service is being installed. The less visual option was chosen. Vegetative landscaping is being considered along South St. to help screen the poles but will be limited due to clearance requirements from the overhead wires and sight distance required for safety at the new intersection of Crescent Way and South Street.

While visual appeal is incredibly important to INHS, so are our green building practices. As we navigate these new building standards and requirements from our partners, we appreciate your understanding as we do our best to accommodate the needs of the communities we serve.
