In Honor of Earth Day, Let’s Talk INHS’ EV Charging Station!

Posted Apr 22, 2021

Did you know that INHS has a public EV charging station at its 210 Hancock development in Ithaca?

In honor of Earth Day, here are some facts about the production of the EV station:

  • It’s used 25 days a month which translates to about 300 days a year,
  • Average session length is three hours,
  • It uses around 3,500-4,000 KWh a year. That equates to 279 gallons of gasoline, 244 gallons of diesel, 2, 742 pounds of coal!

What is an electric car?

Propelled by one or more electric motors, electric cars use energy stored in rechargeable batteries. They are quieter, have no exhaust emissions, and lower emissions overall, making them more environmentally-friendly than a traditional vehicle. Initial costs of an electric vehicle can be offset by fuel cost savings, a federal tax credit, and state and utility incentives.

Use the Vehicle Cost Calculator to compare lifetime ownership costs of individual models of HEVs, PHEVs, EVs, and conventional vehicles.

What are the benefits of owning an electric vehicle?

More cost-effective to run. The cost of the electricity required to charge an EV is around 40 percent less than the cost to use petrol for a similar sized vehicle driving the same distance!

Cheaper to maintain. A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has fewer moving parts than a conventional petrol/diesel car. Servicing is relatively easy, less frequent and overall cheaper than a petrol/diesel vehicle.

Better for the environment! By choosing to drive an EV you are helping to reduce harmful air pollution from exhaust emissions. An EV has zero exhaust emissions, but still creates a degree of greenhouse gas emissions when it is charged from the electricity grid.
