Porchfest and INHS Celebrating Community

September 25th, 2011

INHS Sponsors Porchfest 5

This year Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services was the first official Sponsor for Porchfest an Ithaca festival.  A local grass roots music festival celebrating community through music on porches, Porchfest is in it's fifth year.

The INHS sponsorship money allowed the Porchfest coordinators to purchase a red tent for the information/maps station, which the INHS Staff and Community Relations committee volunteers staffed. We also sold  T-shirts to raise money for the next Porchfest.  The volunteer organizers were able to pay to provide a larger map this year, which was needed due to the numbers of bands on porches playing.

If you are not familiar with the Porchfest concept it is simple: bands volunteer to play for a set on a porch and audience members walk around Ithaca's Fall Creek and Northside Neighborhoods with the map finding the bands they want to hear and visiting those porches.  It is free, no tickets needed.  It now runs three sessions on a Sunday afternoon in September, and draws crowds from around the Fingerlakes.  The web editor spoke with a woman who came from Long Island!

In order to celebrate the neighborhood along with Porchfest, Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services asked clients that have received services from us and live in the Fall Creek neighborhood to play host to a temporary yard sign.  We had fifty TLC signs posted in the area!  See the pictures below for more details. (If you click on them they get larger). And visit the Porchfest web site for more information.

As you can see from the photos this is the quintessential neighborly event.  We had so much fun, we will be back together again next year!
