"I really enjoy owning a home... it's a sense of belonging... it just feels really nice to say to people when I talk to them that I do own my own home."

Providing Affordable Housing Options in the City of Ithaca
History
Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc., is a private non-profit corporation established in November 1976. Promoting home ownership is considered key to meeting INHS' goals: when low-income families become homeowners they become stakeholders in their neighborhood and are in a position to work with other residents to ensure the stability of the neighborhood which, in turn, ensures the value of their property.
A partnership of neighborhood residents, the business community, and the City of Ithaca founded INHS. Funding to begin INHS came from the City of Ithaca, contributions from area businesses, the Gannett Foundation and the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with assistance from the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation.
Comprehensive Housing Revitalization Programs
Volunteers
In addition to technical assistance and financial contributions, many of our supporters are personally dedicated to the revitalization of Ithaca's neighborhoods. For the past few years the Rehabilitation Program has benefited from the volunteer labor of student organizations from On Site Volunteers, Cornell University and Ithaca College as well as individuals who help on small projects. Our partners spend thousands of hours volunteering their time, efforts and expertise. They truly bring the public/private partnership model to life.
INHS is led by a 15-member Board of Directors, which is comprised of neighborhood residents, government officials and business leaders. In addition to the board, which sets policy for the agency and governs all of its operations, INHS has a committee structure to oversee various programs and areas of responsibility. These include Development, House Rehabilitation Loans, and Rental Management. The membership of each committee mirrors the partnership that makes up the board.
The Neighborhood Initiative, created in 1977, promoted downtown Ithaca as an attractive, safe and affordable place in which to live and work and was co-sponsored by Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services and The Ithaca Journal.
Affiliates
INHS has strong affiliations with organizations on the local, state and national levels. Here in Ithaca, INHS is a member of the Ithaca Board of Realtors, the Chamber of Commerce, the Human Services Coalition, Community Development Professionals and an informal network of housing providers. At the state level, INHS is a member of the Neighborhood Preservation Coalition, an alliance of over 250 not-for-profit housing organizations. We are also a member of the NeighborWorks network, a national organization devoted to the development of affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. The NeighborWorks network operates in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
